New operational communication system is extremely reliable in real operations
Wenzel Elektronik built the first phase of a new communication system for the common operational management of buses and suspension railway in Wuppertal. Operator is the WSW mobil GmbH, a subsidiary of WSW Wuppertal Stadtwerke GmbH. During the two-stage project, special challenges are the migration of the legacy system and various interfaces, such as an interface to the operational control system of the buses and to the digital TETRA radio system (read more on this project).
After the successful completion of the availability test, the constructive test mode and the staff training at the customer’s site, the new communication system was switched into real operation. In the first phase of construction, substantially the functions of the analogue bus radio with the interface to the operational control system and to the telephony were realised. Since mid-October 2014, the system is working most reliably and effectively 24 hours, 7 days a week in continuous operation.
“The project has been conducted extremely cooperative and purposefully. Even during the acceptance procedure, our requests for modification were implemented promptly. Thus, we obtained a system that supports excellently our special operations in traffic management,” Dr Christian Kindinger, project leader at WSW mobil GmbH, praises the cooperation with Wenzel Elektronik. The coherent operating procedures as well as the possibility to model operating features in the system, contribute significantly to the high acceptance of the system by the dispatchers.
The modern Wenzel-MACS IP dispatcher system supports all communication services and provides the required interfaces.
The following features has proven to be particularly beneficial for the operational management at the Wuppertal Stadtwerke:
- Customizable direct dial keys
- Structured, task-related phone books
- Convenient system maintenance
- Easy data import
- Intuitive user interface
- Optional use of handset, hands-free/microphone, headset
- Parallel availability of radio (listening) and telephony
Mid-2015, in the second phase of construction the TETRA radio of the suspension railway and the video and communication technology of the railway stops will be integrated.
The WSW mobil GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of the WSW Wuppertaler Stadtwerke GmbH and operates as a public transport company a total of 290 buses and the suspension railway. Since 2007, the WSW Wuppertaler Stadtwerke GmbH is a consortium of the municipal utilities and transport service providers in the city of Wuppertal, which is the primary owner of the holding company with 99.4 percent. The WSW-Group provides technical services and utilities in the area of basic supply and community infrastructure for the North Rhine-Westphalian city with a population of almost 350,000.
